WMT, TGT & DG Bet Big on Capital Spending to Drive Next Growth Wave

Major U.S. retailers are stepping up capital expenditures to strengthen their store networks, modernize supply chains and improve technology capabilities. Investments in new stores, remodels, automation and digital infrastructure remain important as retailers seek to enhance customer convenience, improve operational efficiency and support long-term growth. Walmart Inc.WMT, Target CorporationTGT and Dollar General CorporationDG are directing capital toward these priorities.

Walmart Prioritizes Automation and Supply-Chain Investments

Walmart has increased its capital expenditure outlook for fiscal 2027 to about 4% of annual net sales from its prior expectation of 3.5%. The company continues to invest in infrastructure and capabilities supporting its evolving omnichannel retail model.

The retailer's investments in supply-chain automation, technology, fulfillment capacity and its physical network are helping improve inventory movement, product availability and delivery speed. These capabilities support its growing e-commerce and marketplace operations while strengthening efficiency across its distribution network.

Walmart's global e-commerce sales increased 23% in the second quarter of fiscal 2027, highlighting the importance of its digital and fulfillment capabilities. Despite higher planned capital spending, management expects double-digit free cash flow growth for the fiscal year. This suggests continued emphasis on balancing infrastructure investments with cash generation.

Target Expands Store and Technology Investments

Target is accelerating capital investments to strengthen its physical footprint, supply chain and technology infrastructure. The company expects approximately $5 billion in capital expenditures for fiscal 2026, supporting its strategic growth priorities.

Through the first half of 2026, Target deployed approximately $2.4 billion in capital expenditures, up nearly 30% year over year. Spending has focused on new stores, full-store remodels, supply-chain improvements and technology capabilities. Target opened 17 new stores during the second quarter, bringing its first-half total to 24.

Target is also modernizing technology to improve personalization, strengthen digital engagement and enhance operational execution. These initiatives complement its broader strategy of delivering differentiated merchandise, convenience and value to customers.

Dollar General Focuses on Store Growth and Remodels

Dollar General is maintaining its capital expenditure outlook of $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion for fiscal 2026. During the first half, the company invested approximately $758 million, including $414 million in existing-store improvements, upgrades, remodels and relocations.

Another $168 million supported distribution and transportation projects, while $133 million was allocated to new-store facilities. Technology-related investments totaled approximately $31 million.

Dollar General plans approximately 4,730 real estate projects in fiscal 2026, including new-store openings, relocations and remodels under Project Renovate and Project Elevate. These projects aim to improve store presentation, customer experience and operational efficiency.

Final Words

Capital expenditures remain central to retailers' efforts to strengthen competitiveness and support sustainable growth. While Walmart emphasizes automation and omnichannel capabilities, Target focuses on store modernization and technology, and Dollar General prioritizes network development and remodels. The long-term benefits will depend on disciplined execution, productivity improvements and the ability to generate adequate returns on investment.
